VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame has Olympics fever, with 31 inductees into the Hall of Fame having competed for Team USA in the Olympics.
The Hall is highlighting some of them through its exhibits throughout Virginia Beach. Inductees like LaShawn Merritt, Francena McCorory, Nancy Lieberman, Angela Hucles, and Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker, to name a few, are featured in the displays along the Walk the Hall Tour in Town Center, and in the display case at the Sports Center at the Oceanfront.
The 31 Virginia Sports Hall of Fame inductees have competed in 51 Olympic Games and have won a total of 45 medals, 33 of them gold. The Hall of Fame updates the exhibits multiple times throughout the year to connect its inductees to topical events with connections to sports.
Previous updates have included Virginia Sports Hall of Fame inductees who are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Black History Month featured displays in partnership with the Virginia African American Cultural Center.
The Hall of Fame has also made Olympic updates to its exhibit displays at the Henrico Sports & Events Center in Henrico County.
Visitors can see memorabilia items from various Olympiads throughout the years, and it’s all free.
